About…

The Hotel at Casa Velha do Palheiro blends its 18th Century hunting lodge style, with a contemporary fully serviced Spa, swimming pools, Chapel, nature trails, restaurants, a bar and tea house.

Being a member of the Relais & Châteaux establishment, the Hotel has over 30 sophisticatedly styled rooms and five further suites. Guests are invited to enjoy a culturally immersive experience at Palheiro, as many of the communal areas are charmingly appointed & decorated with gilt framed oils, Madeira prints and lithographs. Palheiro’s18-Hole Golf Course is a sight to behold. Not only is the standard of the 72 Championship Course first-rate, but the backdrop of Funchal & the Atlantic Ocean are Tee-rific!

Being almost 500m (1640ft) above sea level, Palheiro showcases the formidable Madeira landscape. Guests are able to explore the Botanic gardens and relish in the lush scenery.

The recently refurbished Ashoka Spa is said to be inspired by Nature & its 5 Elements, so expect a grand assembling of treatments!

Views from Palherio are possibly the best on Madeira…sunrise & sunset are un-missable! The bustling & popular Funchal is spoilt with an array of restaurants, bars and inspiring sights of the Atlantic Ocean. Given its proximity, Madeira has a subtropical climate, allowing for pleasant weather all year round.

Many holiday goers flock to Madeira to enjoy the festivities of Christmas, the New Year’s & world famous Fireworks Festival, Madeira Carnival (February) and the Madeira Flower Festival (May). Something for everyone!

Madeira is becoming more popular with the outdoors-type f tourist, particularly due to its Levadas & Trekking Trails. The Levadas were originally constricted as an Aqueduct-type system, allowing rain water to flow from the mountains and through the farm lands on the southern part of the island. Still in use today, they have also become popular hiking routes where indigenous birds and florae can be spotted.

“Our first visit to this hotel. Wonderful setting, great staff, great food and excellent golf and gardens. The location in the hills above Funchal provided for for a very relaxing break. If you want peace and tranquillity. this is the place. Couldn't find a single fault and will definitely return.”

“Beautiful location, gardens are lovely and if you visit the frog ponds by the tea house you will be serenaded by the froggy choir. Lovely rooms well kept, breakfast is good and plentiful, restaurant quite expensive but we made use of the Club House where the food was excellent and the view amazing. We used the hotel bus to get into Funchal which is a free service. Would definitely recommend if you like the peace and quiet and will be returning in the future”

“My wife and I stayed at the hotel for seven nights over Christmas. The accommodation is spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable, bathroom was also large and the decor very traditional. We were made very welcome by the staff who were all very friendly and helpful. Staying on a bed and breakfast basis the breakfasts were excellent with a choice of hot cooked or continental. Eggs can also be cooked to order if you require poached or scrambled. As we prefer to eat during the day and sample local restaurants we only had one evening meal at the hotel which was very good. The hotel also provides a shuttle service to and from Funchal which needs to be booked in advance. A shuttle also runs to the golf club - again advance booking is required. The hotel also organised some excursions and also a wine tasting all of which were complimentary to residents. The hotel grounds and gardens are lovely and all in all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.”

“We had an excellent stay at Casa Velha Do Palheiro. The location was stunning, set in between the gardens and the golf course. Staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms spacious and clean, and the food excellent. We managed 4 games of golf in our week - recommend use of a buggy for the golf. Definitely recommend the hotel to our friends”
